Find out “Who is Ashley?” in the Ashley Plays on Sunday, October 26th

The Ashley Plays are an annual series of short monodramas written and performed by students in the Playwriting & New Play Dramaturgy 4290 class. Each playwright is required to write a monodrama inspired by their assigned site and several given circumstances. The short plays are then developed with class dramaturgs. These site-specific performances will take place in nine locations in the Centre for Film & Theatre. The audience will be led through the plays in two groups by guides from the Playwriting & New Play Dramaturgy 3290 class. The Ashley Plays contributor and publicity crew member Andrew Murdoch fills us in on this annual site specific theatrical event at York…

Hamletmachine Mines Shakespeare to Explore Anarchy, Freedom, and Violence

Hamletmachine Mines Shakespeare to Explore Anarchy, Freedom, and Violence

Hamletmachine, directed by Paul Lampert, is Theatre @ York’s first mounted show of the 2014/15 season. Written in 1977, Heiner Muller's postmodern drama is loosely based on Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Theatre@York's adaptation of the text explores revolutions and rebellions from the 1960s to the 2000s. Are there points in our lives when we are Hamlet, raging against the machine that we are a part of? What prompts these rebellions? How do we find identity through rebelling?
